Jefferson wins 2011 YLI Mock Election!

It's official, Thomas Jefferson received 62% of the votes cast for Mock Political President in YLI's National Mock Election held October 20-November 3, 2011. Billed as "the greatest political contest in our nation's history... if it had happened" the exercise gave participating students the opportunity to vote for Alexander Hamilton or Thomas Jefferson for Mock Political President of the United States. Teachers prepared students for this vote using YLI's Birth of Political Parties lesson plan and downloadable classroom decorations including posters and voting stickers.

One YLI educator used the Jefferson vs. Hamilton Mock Election with her students and had this to say,

"I SO appreciate the work you all are doing. It really enhances my lessons, and your timing with this (Jefferson vs. Hamilton Election) is perfect for me!

Lain Whitaker, St. Marys School, Tennessee

Votes across the nation were cast in this historic mock election that allowed students to apply their knowledge of U.S. history in a modern political situation. The YLI team is proud of all of the teachers who used the mock election and supporting materials to help their students get in the game and engage with our democracy.
