Another Successful Mock Election

The Youth Leadership Initiative is proud to announce that over 550,000 votes were cast in the 2010 YLI National Mock Election. Students across the nation voted on state wide races for governor, U.S. House and Senate. Just as in previous years, YLI educators had the opportunity to customize their ballots to add local races, referenda and school-wide elections. 2010 was the first election held on the Youth Leadership Initiative’s brand new website. The new design and functionality made this Mock Election the easiest ever for students and teachers alike.

Leading up to the Mock Election, teachers across the nation used YLI lesson plans to prepare students for their participation. Lesson plans comparing the candidates were created for each of the thirty-six states with a governor’s race along with several key races in states such as Delaware, Nevada and Georgia.

Partnerships with the Secretary of State‘s offices in West Virginia, Georgia and Nevada helped to boost youth civic engagement and participation in the Mock Election. More than a day of voting, the Youth Leadership Initiative provided everything teachers needed to run a successful mock election. This included downloadable classroom decorations, student instructions, a User’s Guide and sample press releases.

The Mock Election polls were open from October 18th through the 28th with results posted on our website on October 29th. Visit YLI’s Mock Election webpage to learn all about this engaging program.
